Fred Kaplan is the “War Stories” columnist for Slate and the author of five books, including most recently Dark Territory: The Secret History of Cyber War. A former Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist with the Boston Globe, he earned a Ph.D. from M.I.T. and has won fellowships with the Council on Foreign Relations and the New America Foundation. His other books include The Insurgents: David Petraeus and the Plot to Change the American Way of War (which was a New York Times best-seller and Pulitzer Prize finalist), 1959: The Year Everything Changed, Daydream Believers: How a Few Grand Ideas Wrecked American Power, and The Wizards of Armageddon.
